The Guardian and Press Gazette are reporting that this weekend's issue of the Daily Star Sunday will be the last edited by Peter Carbery.
The continued "rationalisation" of the Northern and Shell newspapers - in spite of the cash fillip provided by the sale of Channel 5 - is apparently denying the Sunday paper an editor of its own and Dawn Neesom is to take over the whole operation.
This is in line with most other Fleet Street newspaper groups. They are almost all moving towards 24/7 working with (usually) the daily editor in overall command. But they also all have Sunday or weekend editors (largely women, as it happens).
I've never met Carbery or Neesom. They are probably both very nice, talented people.
But I can't help comparing the fruits of their labours this past week. Last Sunday Carbery's paper was one of only two to lead on the story of most pressing public interest after the death of Leon Brittan. The daily meanwhile indulged its obsession with Big Brother and on Tuesday published the front page above with one of the most misleading, sensationalised splash heading I've seen in years.
We wish Mr Carbery the best for the future.
