The commentators 05-05-15...on the general electionIf Britain’s political class had spent the past five weeks digging a hole in the ground and filling it up again, they would have more to show for their work than they do now. Let us not be coy about this: the general election campaign, which concludes on Thursday, has been a carnival of nonsense and futility.
- Janan Ganesh, Financial Times The problem is that voting in an election is not like picking washing powder. Even in the unlikely event that one party wins a majority, their proposals are hardly coherent. If you want Ed Miliband’s housing policies, you get his 50p tax rate and ban on zero-hours contracts thrown in free — whether you like it or not. If you want Tory tax policies, you need to go along with their spending plans and EU referendum.
- Ed Conway, The Times ![]() He has nearly 10 million Twitter followers; his YouTube interview with Ed Miliband received well over a million hits and counting; he is listened to by hundreds of thousands of disillusioned Britons, particularly young people who have been repeatedly kicked over the last few years. Russell Brand matters. And however much bluff and bluster the Tories now pull – maybe more playground abuse from David Cameron, who called Brand a “joke” – his endorsement of Labour in England and Wales will worry them.
- Owen Jones, The Guardian Ed Miliband is so confident of victory this Thursday that he has already commissioned a vast monument to himself. He has caused a stonemason to engrave an 8ft 6in slab of limestone with a series of fine-sounding but essentially vacuous slogans, as if this were East Germany circa 1973, and he has promised – nay, sworn – that on the very first day of his regime the work will be religiously installed in the garden of the prime minister’s offices.
- Boris Johnson, Daily Telegraph Politicians have decided that they don't need us any more. They are connecting directly with the voters. Comment archive, 2015 |
