The commentators 22-05-15...on UK politicsThe Labour party has been slaughtered but it was not the SNP that did the deed and it was not Ukip. They were accomplices to the act but it was carried out by the mortal enemy of the Labour party, the Conservatives. Yet if Labour MPs are any guide to the membership, the Labour party is going to select a leader on the assumption that it needs to refight all the battles it won and abandon the battle it lost. The party is preparing a political strategy of quite unfathomable stupidity.
- Philip Collins, The Times The surest way of cutting immigration is to crash the economy; a task that Ed Miliband would easily have managed. But Mr Cameron has chosen a different path: that of economic success and the headaches that accompany it. The UK has become one of the most successful melting pots in the world, a country so open-minded as to be colour blind. It emerged this week that ethnic minorities in Britain are, if anything, more likely to hold the top jobs (doctors, lawyers, bankers) than whites.
- Fraser Nelson, Daily Telegraph Labour appears to accept that voters don’t know what Labour stands for, but it can’t help that Labour doesn’t know what Labour stands for. To find something to stand for, the candidates could have looked at yesterday’s papers. It turns out that the banks, despite all that’s happened, have still been fiddling currencies, jeopardising the global economy to make themselves even richer.
- Mark Steel, The Independent Immigration is largely out of the UK Government’s control, under EU rules about the free movement of labour, and that the high immigration figures are a mark of the Government’s success. It was the expanding economy, with its wealth of job opportunities, which drew people here. And the result was not that British workers were put out of work: the number of Britons in work went up.
- The Independent Politicians have decided that they don't need us any more. They are connecting directly with the voters. Comment archive, 2015 |
