I was privileged to know both. Dickie spent some of the latter years of his distinguished career as a sometime night news editor on the Time foreign desk, while his son was cutting his teeth as a reporter elsewhere in the building.
The Telegraph and Times obituaries do a far better job than Gameoldgirl ever could in characterising Beeston père, so I merely offer this pair of pictures, which show the esteem with which Rick - an equally distinguished roving reporter who went on to become Times foreign editor - regarded his father.
